Ze wordt tegenwoordig ook de Koepel Kathedraal Haarlem genoemd en is tot stand gekomen in de periode tussen 1895 en 1930, naar ontwerp van Joseph Cuypers. De kathedraal is de op een na grootste Rooms Katholieke kerk van Nederland. De bouw geeft een fysieke verbeelding van de architectuur ontwikkeling in Nederland weer; van neogotisch tot Moorse invloeden.
